Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
Refrain: This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long; This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long.
Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture now burst on my sight; Angels, descending, bring from above Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blest, Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
Fanny J. Crosby wrote the lyrics to this beautiful hymn in 1873. Phoebe Knapp had composed the melody and played it for her friend Fanny Crosby. When Knapp asked if she had any ideas for text, Crosby replied “Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine!”
Fanny Crosby, though blind since shortly after birth, was a mission worker, poet, lyricist, and composer. She was straight up awesome! Crosby wrote over EIGHT THOUSAND(!!!) hymns and gospel songs! “I Am Thine, O Lord”? That’s Fanny. “Rescue The Perishing”? Yep. “Pass Me Not O Gentle Savior”? You betcha. “Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, Our Blessed Redeemer!”? Definitely Fanny- plus about eight thousand more! Next time you open a hymnal, check out the author of your favorite hymn… it just might be Fanny Crosby!
Here's Alan Jackson singing "Blessed Assurance" because it's probably in your head right now.
